Begin by first asking the person - To you, who is God? Who are we? And who is Jesus? Then ask if you could share with them what the Bible says about God, us and Jesus.

First the Bible tells that there is God and there is us. He is our Creator and we are his creatures.

First the Bible tells that there is God and there is us. He is our Creator and we are his creatures.

And God created us to have relationship with Him. So God is loving and we are loved. This is how it was in the beginning. God loved us and we loved God.

And God created us to have relationship with Him. So God is loving and we are loved. This is how it was in the beginning. God loved us and we loved God.

Unfortunately, this relationship of love with God has been ruined. Instead of allowing God to be God and to direct our lives. We decided to do our own thing. We wanted to be our own gods and to decide what would be right and wrong for us. This is what the Bible calls sin. Sin is rejecting God and his leadership. Sin is breaking his law. So though we are loved, we are also sinful. And though God is loving, he is also perfect or holy. So God will not tolerate our sin.

Our sin, then, creates a gap - make that a chasm - between us and God. Sin has destroyed our relationship with God.

So what do we do? Some try to ignore God or explain him away. Who cares about a broken relationship with a perfect and holy God who doesn't exist. The problem is God exists whether we believe it or not. He simply is and denying him doesn't make him go away.

Others may believe that God exists, but they convince themselves that he's not all that perfect or holy. He doesn't really care about our sin. He just looks the other way. But God wouldn't be God if he just ignored sin. Sin destroys his good creation and good creatures. God takes sin seriously and so should we.

Others may say that we're not that sinful. All this talk about sin is just overblown. We're not that bad. But once again, you don't have to look far to see sin. You can see it in yourself and see it in the world around us. We all are very selfish and this world is a pretty scary place. Besides, the point isn't what we think about sin, but what God thinks about sin. And once again, God takes sin seriously.

Still others try to bridge the gap between us and God through religious activities and good deeds. Maybe they pray or go to church or give to the poor or try to be kind and loving, which, of course, are all good things. But we can't bridge gap created by our sin and God's perfection.

The problem with all of our attempts to bridge the gap is that they fall short. No matter how religious or good we are we just can't overcome our sin and make ourselves right with God.

Here are two sobering passages from the Bible that tell us just that.

Why don't you read out loud Romans 3:23. What does it day? And now read Romans 6:23 out loud. What does it say? That's bad news, isn't it? But there is Good News.

And that Good News is Jesus. Though we can't bridge the gap between us and God, God bridged the gap through His Son Jesus. Jesus became one of us, died for us and was raised to new life. Let this cross represent Jesus and how God has made a way for us to have a renewed relationship with him.

Here are two passages that do a great job of summarizing the Good News about Jesus.

And do the same with this one. Though we deserve to die because of our sin, Jesus died on the cross for our sin. He died in our place so we could receive God's forgiveness and love.

So that leads to this all important questions - WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH JESUS? If he is the way that God has provided for us to have a renewed relationship with himself, then we must take Jesus seriously. What should we do?

This is probably the most famous verse in the Bible. You may have seen it at sporting events. Please read it out loud and tell me what it says. I hope this verse makes sense to you now. We don't have to perish. We don't have to fall short. We don't have to die for our own sin. In love God sent Jesus to die for us. So what are we to do with Jesus? We are to believe in him.

The Good News is that we can walk across the bridge of Jesus death on the cross by believing in him. We can turn from our sin and trust in Jesus and be made right with God and have our relationship with him renewed. Are you ready to do that? The words of this prayer can help you make that decision.

You don't have to use these words. You can use your own. Or you can use these and add your own. The point is to personally admit your sin, believe in Jesus and commit to follow God's leadership for your life.
