Kingdom Communication - Prayer

Sometimes we're just not present. Maybe people have had to say to you, "Earth to your name." Share a time when you weren't properly engaged in a relationship or an event and what happened?

Read these passage on the rewards of engagement.

2 Chronicles 16:9
The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

Matthew 5:6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

John 15:5
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Hebrews 11:6
Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

James 4:8
Come near to God and he will come near to you.

Why does God build the condition of wholehearted engagement into our relationship with Him? Does God put conditions on salvation?

Read and react to these quotes ...

Dallas Willard
We must stop using the fact that we cannot earn grace (whether for justification or for sanctification) as an excuse for not energetically seeking to receive grace. Having been found by God, we then become seekers of ever-fuller life in him. Grace is opposed to earning, but not to effort. The realities of Christian spiritual formation are that we will not be transformed “into his likeness” by more information, or by infusions, inspirations, or ministrations alone. Though all of these have an important place, they never suffice, and reliance upon them alone explains the now-common failure of committed Christians to rise much above a certain level of decency. At the core of the human being is will, spirit, and heart. This core is reshaped, opening out to the reshaping of the whole life, only by ENGAGEMENT.
St. Augustine
Without God, I can’t / Without me, God won’t
St. Karl (LOL!)
With me, God will / With God, I can

Which of these rules of engagement do you need to work on and why?

  1. You must see it as an absolute necessity
  2. You must make it your highest priority
  3. You must respond with obedient humility

Let's recite our memory work - the Lord's Prayer.

In a sentence or two what does each phrase of the Lord's Prayer mean? Why is using the Lord's Prayer as a prayer guide a good practice? Do you?

When you get to the phrase, And lead us not into testing/temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, you could use this Armor of God spiritual exercise to protect yourself.

What have you learned about praying without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)? How might our Live a Questionable Life prayer help with that?

Jesus, what would you have me BE, DO or SAY, right now?

What has helped you most in reading the Bible? Do you regularly read the Bible? How can you get started doing that?

You may find this Daily Devotional guide helpful.

Share a time when God spoke to you? How did you respond? What were the results?

On pages 36-37 in Passport, Tim Davidson gives some guidelines on how to know if God is speaking to you. Read through them as a group. Which guideline do you find particularly important right now and why? Is there a guideline missing?

What will you do this week to be more engaged with the Lord? Next week we'll bring a report on how we have been doing?
