Kingdom CELEBRATION - WORSHIP

PASSPORT - WEEK 4

Let's begin with reciting our memory work.

Passport calls us to a biblical balance when it comes to worship. That balance could look like this ...

PASSPORT - 4.001.png

Are you balanced or do you lean a certain way? Which way and why? How could you be more balanced?

Engagement is respect and disengagement is disrespect. How is this true in terms of human relationships? Why is this true in terms of worship?

Revelation 1:9-18

I, John, am your brother and your partner in suffering and in God’s Kingdom and in the patient endurance to which Jesus calls us. I was exiled to the island of Patmos for preaching the word of God and for my testimony about Jesus. It was the Lord’s Day, and I was worshiping in the Spirit. Suddenly, I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet blast. It said, “Write in a book everything you see, and send it to the seven churches in the cities of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”

When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow.  And his eyes were like flames of fire. His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last. I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.

How is there even balance between respect and reverence on the one hand and intimacy and friendship on the other hand in this passage?

If John knew Jesus so well (after all, John was one of Jesus' disciples and maybe even his best friend), why was John "floored" when he saw Jesus in this revelation? Had John ever seen Jesus like this before?

The word worship comes from the two words WORTH and SHIP. If worship is personally and passionately expressing the worth of Jesus, how can you grow in your worship?

Here are two reasons why worship may be difficult ...

  • We're Human. We're both body and spirit. How would a full spirit's (God, angels, demons) experience of reality be different than ours?

2 Corinthians 4:18

We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

What has helped you to fix your eyes on the unseen world?

  • We're Americans

Having grown up on democracy, we may have a tough time grasping the concept of God's Kingdom, and therefore, the worship of KING Jesus?

How do these quotes both challenge and encourage you?

Follow Me: Experiencing the Loving Leadership for Jesus by Jan David Hettinga

If I want the benefit of salvation, it will cost me my personal sovereignty, my independent autonomy, my own agenda, my “throne.” Why? Because that is exactly what I must be saved from in the first place!

Since the heart of our sin problem is our self-centered need to be in control, unless that is addressed in salvation, and the back of our resistance is broken through repentance, nothing really changes. Grace, the supernatural forgiving love and transforming power of God, is released through the deliberate act of giving up the kingdom of self.

When salvation embraces the kingdom a new government arrives. The ultimate issue of WHO is in control is the focus of all your choices from now on, day by day, for the rest of your life. He is your Leader. You are His follower.

Why is worship more than just singing songs on Sunday morning? How can all of life – make that, every decision of life – an act of worship?

  • Can you think of another reason why worship can be so difficult? What has helped you to overcome this difficulty?

What's your next step in fully surrendering to Jesus?

How can the group pray for you?
