Breastplate - Notes

PART 3 - the breastplate of righteousness

Ephesians 6:10-20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Covered the chest, was strapped down to the belt and protected the core

  • The Definition

Right living, being right in the eyes of God, not being guilty, the opposite of sinful

  • The Standard

Not my preferences or public opinion or even civil laws

Not me in comparison to someone else

It’s Gods will, God’s Word, the Bible, the Truth

This is why righteousness is the second piece of armor. It's attached to God’s truth, which reveals His righteousness

  • The Source

Not me & you

Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 3:23 (NLT)

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 3:21-25 (NLT)

But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.

2 Corinthians 5:21

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Jesus is the Source of righteousness because not only does He take away our sinfulness, but gives He us His righteousness!

  • The Purpose

To protect the core (Latin for heart!)

The best way to defend yourself against Satan’s accusation is to agree with him and to remind him about Jesus

  • The Stages

1. Gifted (Past)

2. Growing (Present)

Ephesians 5:8-9
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth).

Ephesians 4:22-24

Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Become who you are! Grow into the person whom God has already made you in Christ - fully righteous

3. Perfected (Future)

  • The News
Judge Aquilina to Rachael
You started the tidal wave. You made all of this happen. You made all of these voices matter. Your sister survivors and I thank you. You are the bravest person I have ever had in my courtroom.
Rachael DenHollander to Dr. Nassar AND us
The Bible you carry speaks of a final judgment where all of God’s wrath and eternal terror is poured out on men like you. Should you ever reach the point of truly facing what you have done, the guilt will be crushing. And that is what makes the gospel of Christ so sweet. Because it extends grace and hope and mercy where none should be found. And it will be there for you.

There is more mercy in God than sin in me! Praise God for the gift of righteousness is Jesus Christ!
