PART 8 - Prayer

Ephesians 6:10-20

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Praying in the Spirit

  • Primarily, Guided by the Spirit
  • Secondarily, Gifted by the Spirit

3. ALL Perseverance

Winston Churchill

I must drop one word of caution, for next to cowardice and treachery, overconfidence leading to neglect and slothfulness, is the worst of wartime crimes.

Luke 18:1-8

One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. “There was a judge in a certain city,”he said, “who neither feared God nor cared about people. A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, saying, ‘Give me justice in this dispute with my enemy.’ The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself, ‘I don’t fear God or care about people, but this woman is driving me crazy. I’m going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!’”

Then the Lord said, “Learn a lesson from this unjust judge. Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?”

WHY EVEN PRAY?!

We think to ourselves, "God already knows what I'm going to pray" so why even pray

Matthew 6:7-13

When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again.

Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! Pray like this:

Our Father in heaven
Hallowed be Your Name
Your Kingdom come
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us today our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from the evil one
For Yours is the Kingdom
And the power
And the glory forever
Amen

Jesus says to us, "God already knows what you're going to pray" so don't babble on, but for sure pray!

St. Augustine

Without God I can’t, but without me God won't

Bottomline - For Paul prayer is an act of war

The Armor of God

Heavenly Father, thank You for issuing me the full armor of God. You have provided everything I need to stand my ground against Satan’s attacks.

I buckle on the belt of truth. Your Word strengthens me against the lies of the enemy.

  • This truth spoke to me while reading the Bible today …

I strap on the breastplate of righteousness. I thank You that You no longer see me as a guilty sinner, but as pure and holy through my faith in Jesus. Because You now see me like Jesus, help me now live like Jesus – rightly before You.

  • Knowing that You don’t condemn me, I repent of …

I put on the combat boots of Gospel peace to give me stability. I celebrate that we are at peace. We were enemies because of my sin, but now we are family and friends because of Your forgiveness. I pray for Your peace to guard my thoughts and feelings throughout this day.

  • I need Your peace for this situation …

I lift up the shield of faith against all the flaming arrows of the evil one. When lies, temptations, fears, and doubts come flying my way, help me to believe in the protection of Your presence and Word.

  • I’m dealing with this attack right now …

I put on the helmet of salvation. I recognize that my mind is susceptible to Satan’s deception. So I cover my mind with the assurance that I am saved by Your grace.

  • I need to take this thought captive to make it obedient to Christ …

I take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Satan cannot stand against the bold use of Biblical truth. So enable me to use Your Word not only to defend myself against Satan’s attacks, but to attack evil and do damage to his kingdom.

  • This Bible passage is my weapon for today …

Finally, I will stay alert and pray. As I fight the good fight, help me to stay in constant communication with You, my Commander.

  • Jesus, what would you have me BE, DO or SAY?
