Keep On (1) - Notes
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
What or Who is the Spirit?
If you think of the Holy Spirit, as so many even among Christian people do today, as a mere influence or power, then your thought will constantly be, "How can I get hold of the Holy Spirit and use it?" But if you think of Him in the biblical way, as a person of divine majesty and glory, your thought will be, "How can the Holy Spirit get hold of me and use me?”
What is our relationship with the Spirit to be like? (Which graphic?)
Ephesians 5:18-21 (NET)
And do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for each other in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
1. Drinking is essential - Physically AND spiritually
You can go weeks without food, but you can only go a few days without water
What Does the Spirit Do?
- Convicts us of sin
- Leads us to Christ
- Gives us eternal life
- Opens up God’s Word
- Assures us of the Father’s love
- Helps us to be holy
- Creates Christian community
- Empowers our witness
- Gifts us for ministry
Francis Chan - Forgotten God
Given our talent set, experience, and education, many of us are fairly capable of living rather successfully (according to the world’s standards) without any strength from the Holy Spirit. Even our church growth can happen without him. Let’s be honest. If you combine a charismatic leader, a talented worship band, and some hip, creative events, people will attend your church.
But is that all we’re after?!
Francis Chan - Forgotten God
I don’t want my life to be explainable without the Holy Spirit. I want people to look at my life and know that I couldn’t be doing this by my own power. I want live in such a way that I am desperate for Him to come through. That if He doesn’t come through, I am screwed. (I probably shouldn’t write that word here, but it’s how I truly feel about this.)
You can live a good life without the Spirit, but you can’t live a Christian life, an abundant life without the Spirit.
2. Drinking is influential - What you drink controls your life
“Under the influence”
You are what you drink!
According to Ephesians 5, drinking in the Spirit leads to …
- Encouraging Words
- Worshipful Hearts
- Grateful Lives
- Healthy Relationships
There’s no question that something is controlling you. The only question is what’s controlling you.
3. Drinking is continual - Present continuous tense verb
“Keep on being filled”
Your life needs to run on both rails
- There’s no choice about drinking
- But what you drink is up to you
- There are just no mixed drinks on God’s Menu
Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols. Be appalled at this, you heavens, and shudder with great horror,” declares the Lord. My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
- What do you thirst for?
- What do you reach for?
- What do you drink?
JUST REMEMBER - No mixed drinks!
HOW TO KEEP BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT
1. Get real about what you really desire
- Examine your heart and motivations
2. Stay thirsty for the Spirit
- Stay humble, dependent & expectant
3. Keep drinking the Spirit
- Stay in the Word, stay in prayer, stay in community & stay obedient
Every time get a drink this week ask …
- Is this good for me?
- How is this influencing me?
AND PRAY …
- Holy Spirit, fill me
