Sex - Sexual immorality

Incest

1 Corinthians 5:1-5
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
  • Mourn the Sin
  • Judge the Sin
  • Remove the Sin (For the good of the person and the church)
1 Corinthians 5:6
Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough?

1 Corinthians 5:9-13
I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

The church is all too often judgmental of those outside the church and too lax with those inside the church

Don’t expect non-Christians to live like Christians. Expect Christians to live like ones though. So hold each other accountable.

IT WORKED! The person repented and was welcomed back to church!

2 Corinthians 2:6-8
The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.

PREMARITAL (Pornos) / EXTRAMARITAL / HOMOSEXUAL

1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Paul is being compassionately clear
and clearly compassionate
  • Not Just Sexual Sins
  • All Sin is Serious
  • No Unforgivable Sin
  • Always Hope for Change

WHAT YOU WERE

  • The gift of forgiveness
  • Help to overcome temptation (not usually its removal)
1 CORINTHIANS 10:13
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
  • The change of obedience (not necessarily of orientation)

CALIFORNIA BILL AB 2943

“Any practices that seek to change an individual’s sexual orientation” are illegal, including “efforts to change behaviors or gender expressions, or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.”

1 CORINTHIANS 6:11

And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Change therapy may be outlawed, but you can give …

  • Social transition therapy to a 5 year old
  • Puberty blocking drugs to a 10 year old
  • Hormonal therapy to a 15 year old
  • Sex change surgery to a 18 year old

Sounds like CHANGE to me!

PROSTITUTION

1 Corinthians 6:15-20
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

  • Sex Creates Oneness (Pure and healthy in marriage, sinful and damaging outside)
  • Multiple partners create …
  1. emotional confusion
  2. commitment & bonding difficulties
  3. sexual dysfunction
  • Sexual sin impacts our own bodies (thoughts, feelings, desires & health)
  • Jesus bought our bodies with His blood. Our bodies are a temple for the Holy Spirit. So use them for God’s Glory!

Bottomline

  • There is more mercy in God than sin in me!
  • How can we pray for you?
  • How can we support you?

VINEYARD’S RESPONSE TO HOMOSEXUALITY
May 2013

Vineyard USA Executive Team: Four central points anchoring Vineyard's response to issue of homosexuality.

First, we must be committed to both mission and holiness. The message of the kingdom is a message of welcome. Anyone can come to the feast- Jesus himself was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard. And at the same time, the message of the kingdom is repent, believe, and follow Jesus in every area of life. At times, it can feel as if these two principles are mutually exclusive. But we are convinced they are not. It is possible to offer the radical welcome of Jesus while calling people to high standards of discipleship.

Second, the Bible promotes, celebrates and affirms marriage as a covenantal union between a man and a woman. Marriage is not the highest purpose of humanity. The apostle Paul himself was single, as was Jesus. At the same time, it must be honored as a sign and gift from God.

Third, we believe that all humans are to be treated with kindness and compassion, as the image-bearers of God on earth. We are all sinful, and it is profoundly unbiblical to pick out one sin that is stigmatized above others. In the history of the church, homosexual persons experienced such sinful stigmatization. We repent and renounce this sort of sinful treatment.

Fourth, we believe that outside of the boundaries of marriage, the Bible calls for abstinence. We know that in our culture, premarital sex, along with many other forms of non-marital sex, has become normative. We want to lovingly help people of any sexual orientation to live up to this standard. We recognize that it can be a difficult journey, and there must be grace along the way. The powerful, beautiful gift of human sexuality must be stewarded with seriousness and compassion within our movement.
