Questionable (6) - Notes

Caught off guard

Hurricane Michael

Hurricane Michael

“This is really an amazing event,” said Andrew Dessler, a professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University. “It came out of nowhere and really intensified rapidly. It had the pedal to the metal all the way until it hit the coast.”

More than 370,000 people in Florida were ordered to evacuate but officials believe many ignored the warning.

Gut Wrenching Questions

  • Why didn’t God stop this?

  • Was God punishing them?

Luke 13:1-5

Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

Karl’s Addition

“How about those poor folk up in Mexico Beach, FL - do you think they were worse sinners than you here in Tampa Bay. I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

1. God’s Accountability

  • What It ISN’T

John 9:3

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

A 1 to 1 relationship between sin and suffering

The Point: Don’t focus on how God is going to hold others accountable. Instead focus on how He will hold YOU accountable!

  • What It IS

2 Corinthians 5:10

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

2 Corinthians 5:11, 20

Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others.

“Be reconciled to God.”

2 Corinthians 5:21

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Inescapable eternal accountability

We will be judged by our works, but saved by God’s grace

Luke 13:6-9

Then Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”

2. God’s Patience

  • What It IS

2 Peter 3:9

God is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

The Bottom Line: If you aren’t dead and if Jesus hasn’t returned yet, God is being patient with you!

  • What It ISN’T

2 Peter 3:10

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

2 Corinthians 6:2

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Do we get it?

  • Yes, God is patient, but He will hold me/you accountable

  • We will blend prayerful patience with compassionate insistence

Who is God asking you to be prayerfully patient yet compassionately insistent with?

Jesus, I thank you for your amazing patience with me. But knowing that you will ultimately hold me accountable, I don’t want to try your patience. So I turn from my sin and I trust in the gift of your forgiveness. Use me now to get the word out that though judgment is certain, grace is offered in the Name of Jesus.

Can you help with Wednesday morning’s breakfast?

Can you provide a host home for a Revive Florida volunteer?
