Pursuit (4) - Questions

1 TIMOTHY 6-11.THE PURSUIT-1.001.png

Read …

Galatians 4:19

My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.

When was Paul first in labor pains for the Galatians? Why is he in labor pains for them again? Why is Paul so passionate about this? (Passion from the Latin word Passio meaning to suffering.) Why was Paul wiling to suffer for this?

The questions Pastor Karl addressed were How do you fight the ongoing battle? How do you participate in your progressive renewal? He suggested that this is the way …

The Way - via

1. Vision

  • To Become like Jesus (BE, DO & SAY)

  • The Conspiracy of the Little Jesuses

On a scale of 0-10, what is the level of your vision of becoming like Jesus? Why is vision so important?

2. Intention

  • You don’t coast into maturity

  • You decide each and everyday to pursue it

On a scale of 0-10, what is the level of your intention of becoming like Jesus? Why is intention so important?

3. Activities

  • Prolonged disciplines that position you to receive God’s transforming grace

  • Not TRYING on the spot, but TRAINING “off the spot”

Why is training better than trying? How have you seen it work in your life?

What activities have helped you most in becoming more like Jesus?

Bible Meditation/Memorization (Muttering)

Read …

Joshua 1:7-8

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Psalm 1:1-3

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

Colossians 3:15

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

Bible meditation/memorization (muttering) leads to two things …

  1. Internalizing Truth (Reprogramming Mind)

  2. Externalizing Truth (Transforming Life)

Wouldn’t it be great if we got a new mind when we first believe in Jesus? It doesn’t work that way. The mind remains tainted by sin and lies even after we become believers. How does the illustration of having to add a single pure ice cube to your mind to renew it help you visualize the renewing process? Are you putting in an ice cube a day? A sliver of one? One once a week? Are you happy with the results?

React to these two quotes …

Romans 12:2

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Psychiatrist Paul Meier

Daily meditation on Scripture, with personal application, is the most effective means of obtaining personal joy, peace, and emotional maturity. On average, it takes about three years of daily Scripture meditation to bring about enough change in a person’s thought patterns and behavior to produce statistically superior mental health and happiness.

Why is storing up Scripture as a treasure in your heart important?

Psalm 119:11 (KJV)

Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against Thee.

Psalm 119:11 (ESV)

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

How’s your memorization of 2 Timothy 2:22 going?

2 Timothy 2:22

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
