Week 1 - TO RENEW CHRIST’S LIFE AMONG HIS PEOPLE

If Seek God for the City is a biblical prayer guide for praying for the city, why does it start with us praying for the church?

What communicable “disease” does the church gathered and the church scattered carry?

Ezekiel 37:1-14

The Lord took hold of me, and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley filled with bones. He led me all around among the bones that covered the valley floor. They were scattered everywhere across the ground and were completely dried out. Then he asked me, “Son of man, can these bones become living people again?”

“O Sovereign Lord,” I replied, “you alone know the answer to that.”

Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to these bones and say, ‘Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am going to put breath into you and make you live again! I will put flesh and muscles on you and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

So I spoke this message, just as he told me. Suddenly as I spoke, there was a rattling noise all across the valley. The bones of each body came together and attached themselves as complete skeletons. Then as I watched, muscles and flesh formed over the bones. Then skin formed to cover their bodies, but they still had no breath in them.

Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to the winds, son of man. Speak a prophetic message and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so they may live again.’”

So I spoke the message as he commanded me, and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life and stood up on their feet—a great army.

Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones represent the people of Israel. They are saying, ‘We have become old, dry bones—all hope is gone. Our nation is finished.’ Therefore, prophesy to them and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: O my people, I will open your graves of exile and cause you to rise again. Then I will bring you back to the land of Israel. When this happens, O my people, you will know that I am the Lord. I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live again and return home to your own land. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken, and I have done what I said. Yes, the Lord has spoken!’”

What was the historical setting of this vision? How is this vision the reenactment of Adam’s creation? Why was this vision so encouraging to the people of Israel?

Ephesians 2:1,4-5

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation: The old has gone, the new has come!

1 John 5:13

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Share one word that would describe what caused you to believe in Jesus and so receive eternal life and then a sentence or two explanation about it. If you have not received eternal life, share a word that would describe what’s stopping you and a sentence or two explanation about it.

John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

The life Jesus gives us isn’t just a quantity of life, but a quality of life, a full life? Are you experiencing this full life or abundant life? Why or why not?

Both God’s Word and God’s Spirit played a vital role in the resurrection of God’s Old Testament people. His Word and Spirit continue to play a vital role in the resurrection of God’s New Testament people. Read …

John 6:63

The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

How does Jesus use His Spirit and the Word to bring about our initial conversion to eternal life and the continual transfusion of eternal life? Have you shut the value preventing this transfusion? How could you open that value to allow for a great flow of abundant life into your life?

Both the church gathered and scattered is to carry the life of Christ wherever it goes. How can this make everything better (though not necessarily perfect)? Give an example where the life of Christ in you made a difference either in the gathering or the scattering?

What is your reaction to Wherever We Go by the Newsboys?

Lyrics …

Wherever we go, bluebirds sing
And the flowers bloom and the grass gets green
It's a curious thing
But it's just our thing

Wherever we go, the bees behave
In the treetops, squirrels smile and wave
It's a curious thing
And it's humbling

Where we go, little glow-worms glow
Little roadrunners run ahead
Gonna tell their friends
Little mice, little men
Get 'em all excited, all invited

Hands up, holler back here
Let's throw this party in gear
We brought the welcome mat
Wherever we go, that's where the party's at

Hands up, holler back now
We don't claim any know-how
We've givin’ God all that
Wherever we go, that's where the party’s at

Wherever we go, the dumb get wise
And the crime rates drop and the markets rise
It's a curious thing
But it's just our thing

Bullies make nice, crooks repent
And the Ozone layer shows improvement
It's a curious thing
And it's humbling

Where we're led, all the living dead
Wanna leave their zombie mob
It's a touching scene when they all come clean
God help us, we just love our job

Hands up, holler back here
Let's throw this party in gear
We brought the welcome mat
Wherever we go, that's where the party's at

Hands up, holler back now
We don't claim any know-how
We've givin’ God all that
Wherever we go, that's where the party’s at

Throw your hands up high
High, throw your hands up

This is the message we spread
Bringing life to the dead
This is the Gospel Expo
Follows wherever we go

This is the message we spread
Bringing life to the dead
This is the Good News Expo
Follows wherever we go

Hands up, holler back here
Let's throw this party in gear
We brought the welcome mat
Wherever we go, that's where the party's at

Hands up, holler back now
We don't claim any know-how
We've givin’ God all that
Wherever we go, that's where the party’s at
