Week 4 - To establish righteousness in our cities
Defining our terms
Being morally right
Having done the right thing
Being right in God’s sight
Having a right standing with God
Being morally wrong
Having done the wrong thing
Being wrong in God’s sight
Having a wrong standing with God
2 Timothy 2:22
Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
So how should we PURSUE righteousness?
There’s a RIGHT way and a WRONG way
What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works.
1. The RIGHT WAY to Pursue Righteousness - faith
2. The WRONG WAY to Pursue Righteousness - works
They stumbled over the stumbling stone. As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”
JESUS - STUMBLING STONE
I’ll be my OWN savior, thank you very much. And I’ll do it on my own, the old fashioned way, “I’ll earn it.”
Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”
3. The COMMAND & DEMAND of Righteousness
Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”
4. The INABILITY of Righteousness
But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified [RIGHT-ified], and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
5. The GIFT of Righteousness
How Do You Receive It?
Believe It - Make It Personal
Declare It - Make It Public
6. The CULMINATION of Righteousness
Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
Jesus kept the COMMANDS and met the DEMANDS
Jesus is the Righteous ONE
For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
7. The PURSUIT of Righteousness
The RIGHT Way
Receive the GIFT of Jesus’ righteousness (obedience) through FAITH
Obey the COMMAND of righteousness through love, gratitude and the power of the HOLY SPIRIT
It’s both a GIFT (to receive through faith) and a COMMAND (to obey by Spirit-empowered choice)
8. The WITNESS of Righteousness
Humility & Gratitude
Obedience & Blessing
“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
